Synopsis

More than 20 years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe, contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable -- he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Refreshing

This was a great movie.I found it refreshing from the regular movies. It was great that they made it look so "Alien" at times and made it look like a huge story. It seemed a little like it was referencing whats happening in the world, with refugees living in tent cities or India with its slums. Once again, great movie, gets better the further you watch and I would recommend this!

really good movie!

I don't know why some people didn't like this movie at all... my boyfriend and I enjoyed it from start to finish! Really good action, sci-fi movie! I haven't seen a good movie like this in a while!

Start the Oscar Rolls...

The first thing I need to say about this movie is simple: If you're a Science Fiction fan, get off your butt and go buy tickets for ths movie now!
Oh my god, this was a movie for the making. I have to admit, though, that the first half an hour was kinda disturbing (for me, anyway) but past that, the suspense and thill of this movie holds you and grips you tight.
The special effects for this movie were absolutely spectacular, there is nothing like it i have ever seen. Where some movies leave flaws in their effects, this movie doesn't.
Of course, what would a good movie be without acting. The parts played by the actors were so realistic and lifelike that I actually felt fear for them (no joke!). As the movie builds up on its action and its well placed scenes, it leaves nothing behind but a feeling of wanting to see it over and over again.
I could go on and on for an eternity telling about the complex storyline, but its easier to just see it than to try and explain it. The actions scenes were a little gory, but were well coreographed (is that how you spell it?) and the acting made it all come together.
All in all, perfect sci-fi film. No doubt about it.

Peace Out!

AwEsOmE!!! Best scifi since Blade Runner

Best scifi since Blade Runner and that's a long long time. Incredibly filmed with clever references to old South African Apartheid. MNU and D9 websites tie in with the movie seamlessly, making it even more realistic. I could go on forever about the story but you should see it for yourself. Outstanding performances from the cast, who needs "A list" actors? Fantastic special effects. This movie has given me hope for the genre again, I can't wait for District 10!!!

alright. the first half an hour or so of the movie, you are quite unsure what is going on, and there is no real idea who the main character is. But once you get past that, you start to be interested a lot more in it. definatly a must see, if you dont mind the F word, and you are not fond of people exploding.

P.S. the animation is outstanding.
P.S.S. whatever you do, dont see G.I. Joe...LOL

District 9 a DISASTER!

OMG! This movie was one I so wanted to see since it looked excellent from the trailers. Was I in for a disappointment! Less then 10 minutes after the movie began I turned and asked my wife if it was going to get any better then this? And it DIDN'T! The film itself had little or no plot and was totally unrealistic! Come on people... when is the human race ever going to NOT destroy anything that is alien, let alone welcome them to live with us! The whole movie left me very bored and wanting to leave! And I don't know which was more upset: my stomach with the constant movement of the camera which continues throughout the whole movie or the fact that I had just wasted my good, hard earned money to see this!

Incredible film!!!

Just finished watching this movie and it was incredibly thought provoking and the CG mixed flawlessly with the live action.

Unique plot and story with incredible actions but the action was never overshadowing the story line.

Go see this film...

al in all good movie

it was very good a bit gory and not really needed but great film kinda like avp and et

Slow to start, but good.

Based on the trailers, i was expecting ALOT more action, it was VERY slow to get interesting...reminded me of cloverfield, alot of camera shake too.
I finally got caught up in the main character & can see them doing a sequel. Not great..but not bad either.

Disturbing but Good

My hubby and I walked out of the theater asking "was it really good or was it bad?" It was not at all what we were expecting, but over dinner we decided it had to be good because we were still talking about it! We were expecting more of a thriller-style movie, but it turned out to be more of a sci-fi movie with a statement.

I think as long you don't go into it with any pre-conceived ideas of what you are about to watch, you will enjoy it.

Excellent Movie from start to finish!

I was reluctant to see this film, it was my better half who wanted to see it. I was thinking it was going to be dismal, but I was pleasantly surprised, the movie was fantastic. From beginning to end, I was gripped by the action, characters and story.
I would recommend coming to see this movie!

Disappointing

1

Based on the trailer, I thought this movie would be pretty good. I was wrong. I normally love any sci-fi movies, but I was very disappointed by the "documentary" style of this one. The meaningless drivel as the main character droned on about what he was doing was boring. It was also a bit violent in my opinion.
I think the story line had lots of potential, I just didn't care for how it was presented. It reminded me of Cloverfield a bit, so if you enjoy that sort of movie, you may like this one.

Good Movie

3

I thought this movie could have been made really really bloody quit easily but they kept it tammed. The one thing I liked about this movie that some new movies are lacking now adays is that this did not look like a video game it looked real the director and producers took the time to make the movie look great... I find some movies IE GI Joe or Wolverine have some scenes that look like it is a video game and do not take the time to give detail to scenes

Good Movie

Cheers,

I was looking for a really scary movie that wassupposed to be in Nigera. They don't have to make a movie all aliens just look at the poor people who live like that everyday.they have no spaceship to take them away.

This is not your typical science fiction movie and the ending seems to be a setup for a sequel.
This is a wierd movie, took a bit of getting use to, but in the end I liked it.
This is a movie where all the humans except one who redeems himself are the bad guys, the aliens are not noble but a human and alien make a unlikely alliance and help each other.
There is lots of shoot'um up but is almost distracting to the main line of the movie.

Is there a District 10?

Went to see District 9 last night and in the 10 mins wanted to leave the theatre, but something kept me from leaving...perhaps it was the action and the cgi effects, the new TV reporting/ documentary style of presenting the movie or perhaps the possibility of alien existence which was so convincing. The theatre was jam packed had to squish myself between 2 people and that is a rarity...so coming back to the movie....honestly, there were moments that made it believable, but having seen so many movies of the Sci-Fi kind, the movie would get a 3 star rating from me. For me it was a cross between Transformers, ET (wanna go home) some Military and Die-Hard Action heroics and plenty of gunfire and ammunition. I left the theatre feeling... what's next...are we so out of ideas that we now have to create human-alien species amalgamation?

On the plus side it appears to be very popular amongst the younger generation (say 17 to 30) and was even suggested by the usher that it would be a hit. So who knows if this is the next step into FantasyLand, we may have a District 10.
