What is IMAX?
A Canadian invention, IMAX® motion picture systems are the finest in the world. Images of unsurpassed size, clarity and impact are enhanced by a superb, specially designed, eight-channel, multi-speaker sound system. IMAX® puts you into the centre of the action in a way no ordinary screen presentation can, drawing you in with sounds and images so intense you can almost feel them. The term IMAX® means Maximum Image, one of many characteristics forming the IMAX® experience.

Screen

Images are projected onto a giant six storey high by seven storey wide screen which extends beyond your peripheral vision. It's so big, in fact a whale can appear life size.

  Theatre Design

Large format films are shown in our specially designed theatre where the seating deck is steeply raked with a precise audience to screen ratio. This means that every seat is the best in the house.

  Film Frame Size

The largest film frame size in motion picture history, an IMAX® film frame is ten times larger than a conventional 35 mm frame which you see in a normal movie theatre.

  The Projectors

IMAX® projectors are the most advanced, highest-precision and most powerful projectors ever built. The Empire IMAX Theatre boasts the first installation of the IMAX 3D SR System which is capable of playing both 2 and 3 dimensional IMAX features. The key to their superior performance and reliability is the unique "Rolling Loop" film movement. The Rolling Loop, originally invented by Ron Jones, an Australian, adapted and enhanced by IMAX, advances the film horizontally in a smooth, wave-like motion. During projection, each frame is positioned on fixed registration pins, and the film is held firmly against the rear element of the lens by a vacuum. As a result, the picture and focus steadiness are far above normal standards.

  Awards

In 1986, the system was recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with an Academy Scientific and Engineering Award for technological innovation and excellence. IMAX received a 1988 Canada Export Award for superior export performance from the Canadian Government's Department of External Affairs. In 1991, IMAX received an Award of Excellence from the Canadian Government's Department of Communications, for its contributions and achievements in the field of communications and culture. IMAX Corporation won the sole 1997 Oscar® Statuette for Scientific and Technological Achievement.
